Purpose of this Journey
This Solidarity Journey will take you high into the remote and isolated Star Mountains of PNG where the giant Ok Tedi mine is situated.
Built and once owned by BHP the Ok Tedi copper mine dumps everything of the mountain that is not copper into the massive Fly River system with devastating consequences for the ecosystem and the villages that rely on the river for the continuance of lifestyles and economies.
Following a visit to the mine and briefings with key mine personnel you will travel to the river port of Kiunga to conduct an impact study of the mine on the river system and villages and to witness the work of the Church as it delivers a range of projects and programs.
A core element of the journey will be to travel deep into the jungle up a pristine stretch of the Fly river to experience life as it has been lived for thousands of years in a remote and isolated village.
